Cultus Lake is a lake, community and provincial park south of Chilliwack, about 11 kilometres from the Chilliwack River. The park, created in 1950, covers 656 hectares on both sides of the lake.
What that means for your HVAC
Many lake properties began as summer cottages and were later converted to year-round homes, sometimes with limited insulation and patchwork heating. Ductless heat pumps are a common way to add efficient heat and cooling without major renovation; see ductless heat pumps.
Seasonal homes
Cottages that sit empty for part of the year still need some heat to prevent frozen pipes and damp. A smart thermostat lets owners check temperatures from home and get an alert if the heat fails during a cold snap.
Swílhcha'
Cultus Lake is an important place for Stó:lō spirit quests, and its traditional Ts'elxwéyeqw name, Swílhcha', is translated as "an empty basin that quickly filled with water." The lake is the source of the Sweltzer River, and at one time had a sawmill and booming ground before becoming a provincial park. Today summer visitors fill the area. Lakeside homes in the trees see leaves, needles and moisture around outdoor units, so clearing them each fall and booking a spring check before cottage season keeps systems ready.
