Furnace Repair & Service in Chilliwack, BC
When arctic outflow pushes cold air down the valley, a furnace problem can't wait. These checks are safe to do before a technician arrives, and they help narrow down the cause.

Check it's on Heat, set a few degrees above the room temperature, and that the display is working. Swap the batteries if it's blank or dim.
Service switch and breaker
The furnace has an on/off switch nearby that looks like a light switch, plus a breaker in the panel. Make sure both are on, and reset a tripped breaker once only.
Filter
A blocked filter makes the furnace overheat and shut down on its safety limit. Replace it and give the furnace a few minutes to try again.
Outside vents
High-efficiency furnaces vent through two plastic pipes on an outside wall. Leaves, snow drifts or a wasp nest can block them and stop the furnace.
Condensate drain
High-efficiency furnaces produce water that drains through a small tube. A blocked or frozen drain will shut the furnace off until it's cleared.
Propane homes
Rural homes on propane should check the tank gauge before booking a repair. Running low can cause ignition problems.
Noises and smells
A dusty smell on the first cold day is normal. Loud bangs at start-up, squealing or a lingering burning smell are not.
Gas smell
If you smell gas or propane, leave the house and contact your gas supplier's emergency line from outside. Don't use switches or phones inside.
CO alarms
Homes with fuel-burning appliances need working carbon monoxide alarms near bedrooms. Test them every fall.
Book the repair
Tell the technician the furnace type, its age and what it's doing. Send a request and a heating and cooling contractor will get in touch.
Older furnaces
A furnace in its third decade with repeated repairs is worth pricing for replacement before it fails in a cold snap.
