Sardis is the urban core of Chilliwack's south side, about 5 kilometres from downtown, bordered roughly by Highway 1, Evans Road, the rail line and Stevenson Road. It's a busy shopping area surrounded by neighbourhoods.

Named after an ancient capital

A.C. Wells, Adam Vedder and Jane Evans were among the first farmers to settle the area around 1860, and Mrs. Vedder chose the name Sardis after the ancient capital of Lydia. The BC Electric Railway reached Sardis in 1910, tying the farming community to Chilliwack and Vancouver. Many streets still follow the old farm grid, and some homes sit on what were once large farm lots, which can mean long duct runs to rooms added over the years. A tune-up that checks airflow to those far rooms is worthwhile.
